YOUTH SECTION

Ardrossan Accies RFC Youth section also has a Mini Rugby section, for boys and girls from P4 to P7. We have a small but dedicated group of volunteer coaches, most of who are parents of young players themselves, and we play and train on Sundays, normally from 1230pm. The minis are our young players introduction to the game, and as such fulfils a vital role in ensuring players have FUN while learning the basic skills and fitness requirements for safe participation in our sport. Training sessions are themed, and we mix drills introducing the main core skills of passing and catching, tackling, offloading and ball presentation, with fun fitness games to encourage physical development and mobility essential in playing the game.

We have a full fixture calendar organised, and normally play both home and away matches every other week, with training on the Sunday in between, moving indoors over the very worst of the winter weather to the games halls at St Matthews school, and our season finishes with our famous Mini Tournament, with teams from all over coming down to play and compete for trophies and medals. We have always worked on the principals of fair play and participation for all, so the winners are not always the team who score the most tries, but may be awarded extra merit points for sportsmanship, teamwork, excellent tackling etc. Rugby is always the winner!!

Ideally we will run teams in each age group from P4 to P7, numbers dependant, and as our players progress through these age groups they will be introduced to the basics of the lineout and scrum, always with their safety and understanding of the game foremost, all of which builds to when they move on to the S1/S2 section, where scrums are contested. We pride ourselves at Ardrossan that almost all our senior squad have come through our own youth section, and the fruits of our Youth section are apparent in Ardrossan being in their third consecutive season in the elite Premier 3 division of Scottish rugby, and finishing in the top 3 last season. Our senior players make guest appearances at our mini section training, and are always happy to answer questions from our young players - there is also an opportunity for our minis to be mascots and ball boys (or girls!!) on Home match days too, where you can meet the squad, and maybe even share a Kandy Bar pie too!!

We are always looking for new players, and helpers too, remember you don't have to have played the game before to join, and if you fancy helping out, we will get you all the training you need to be a qualified youth coach, so come along any Sunday and give it a go!! Just introduce yourself to any of our coaches, or see Heather in the office at the clubhouse on a Sunday.
